Audrey loves chasing cats, but has no idea what to do when she manages to catch up with them.

Do all dogs exhibit this kind of behaviour, or do some actually pick up their captured quarry in their drooling jaws and carry it home where it is, perhaps, eaten raw with a few dry biscuits as a side-dish? Audrey certainly doesn’t: she merely gently smells their faces on the rare occasions she gets close enough to do so.

This morning, I was suddenly yanked along on the other end of her lead at full pelt towards a pleasant, semi-detached house on Victoria Street. When we reached her intended destination, waiting in ambush for Audrey by the side of a green wheelie-bin was a sad and scrawny, brindled little feline who was already hissing and spitting in defiance at her approach.

A young man appeared from the side of the house and pointed at his front door; ‘Paris! Inside!’ he demanded. Before disappearing inside, the ugly thing – which was probably named after Paris Hilton – reached out and delivered to my dog’s eager nose a vicious scratch. I know she will not learn from the incident; it will not temper her enthusiasm for chasing the little beasts – it is a well-established canine biological impulse and Audrey is, after all, a dog: a canine dog.

Before we walked away, I apologised to Paris’s owner. ‘She just can’t resist the thrill of chasing them,’ I told him, adding as a friendly after-thought: ‘A bit like me with pretty girls.’ He looked at me as if I were a naked infidel praying in the Vatican and did not reply – his enthusiasm for communication obviously dampened by the early morning drizzle.

Audrey once caught a blackbird. Pouncing on it with her big forepaws, it shrieked and flapped so hard that she panicked. Shocked and terrified, she ran straight to me to position herself between my legs for protection. She looked up at me with her big, brown eyes and seemed to ask: ‘What the **** was that!?

Pretty girls make me panic and I have to run away, especially when they start flapping as I try to pin them to the floor.

Well, you’re young - your seduction techniques are still developing. It’ll come, Nelson, it’ll come.

My dog checks for hidden cats under all the parked cars we pass. Like Audrey though, she has no idea what to do when she eventually corners a cat.

Jez,
Ha ha! Audrey is exactly the same. She loves it when one is hiding underneath a parked vehicle. She gets so excited, she starts to whimper and vibrate.
She is mostly Collie so it must be the herding instinct taking over, wanting to control her flock and all.
