The Sound of Ghosts / March 19 2008
There is a large, man-sized receptacle in the bathroom I sometimes utilise for the purpose of bathing that I recently realised would make an excellent device for capturing ghosts.
And I was right: I’ve caught one.
Audrey is fascinated by our prisoner, completely spellbound as she peers over the edge of the immense plastic container, staring and panting at this shadowy apparition to let it know who it is that has the upper hand in this novel situation.
It does look a little different to the spectres and phantoms depicted in popular literature and Hollywood movies; it’s small and black and has eight legs. But we are both thoroughly delighted that our ad hoc ghost trap has actually worked.
And I can also tell you this: ghosts do not make a sound. They are completely silent beings – no moaning or wooing.
Once Audrey’s interest in the supernatural has surfeited and her attention returns once more to more substantial notions – such as the worrying of rabbits during our post-luncheon country walk – I plan to do the decent thing and release our tiny captive banshee back into the ether from whence it came.

Does this mean I have an outbreak of ghosts in my bathroom? That’s a relief, I thought they were something else. Don’t let Audrey eat it, she’ll become a polter goose.

Nelson,
You have an outbreak?
Who ya gonna call?
(Seriously, I wouldn’t worry, they aren’t very big, you know. Not like in that film with the wasps and the mustard and everything. Remember? That time in Germany?)

Shiver. I hate that kind of ghost. All those legs. I have to get Mr B to remove them forthwith, and in a hurry.

Jo,
Poor ghost. What does he do with the legs once he has removed them?
