Vertical Thinking / October 30 2007

Believe it or not, I have just had to rescue a dog from a tree – my dog, to be precise.

Audrey spotted a cat this morning and immediately gave chase. The poor thing was obviously terrified of such a fearsome hound, but when I caught up, it had disappeared into the relative safety of the high branches of a young maple tree. It was staring down at her disdainfully as she frantically bounced around in doggy frustration, trying to figure out where it had gone.

‘Look up, Audrey,’ I told her. ‘Try some vertical thinking.’

To my temporary delight, she did just that: Edward de Bono would have been very proud of her. Looking up, she immediately spotted her prey; but instead of staying where she was and merely barking excitedly like any normal dog would, up she went in hot pursuit.

The cat flew away in disgust. I, on the other hand, had to spend fifteen minutes retrieving a dog from a tree. She was clinging on for dear life about six feet off the ground, her little legs shaking with fatigue as she desperately tried to keep her purchase among the soft, bendy branches. It is a good job that dogs do not live in trees - they would have such a difficult time of it day after day. Audrey was licking her lips with worry as if she were thinking, ‘Oh, how I wish I hadn’t come up here.’

I knew exactly how she was feeling.

Jo,
She isn’t that talented. She got up the tree but couldn’t get down again. (Story of my life, actually.)
