Audacity Always / June 25 2007
I was very pleased recently to get a message on MySpace from Bill who is an American musician and songwriter. Bill is also disabled. He has a lot of fans, which is not surprising: his stuff is very good and he is a lovely man.
He was very complimentary about my music and I struck up a conversation with him and his brother John who manages his site, which led to Bill and I starting to collaborate on a new song. This was not a wholly serious venture, you understand, but it was an enjoyable experience none the less.
The song was a country and western ballad of sorts entitled You Can Call Me Mary. At least I think that was the title: it was a few months ago now and we never actually finished the joint composition – which is a shame as it means another good song will never see the light of day.
I really appreciated something that Bill said about the Enormous track Something In My Heart.
He said: ‘Audacious middle section!’
‘Thanks, Bill. But what do you think about the beginning and end of the song? Do you like those as much as the middle?’ I asked him.
His reply: ‘They are also good; at least I wouldn’t have heard the middle if the beginning didn’t keep me going. Nice chunky drum sound, with an upfront and lively vocal, rather glam… But I am always impressed with audacity– Bowie said “Audacity, always audacity; paint with a wide brush.” And I agree– and when those horns come on my eyes pop open– surprise! So, thanks! There are too many timid folk about… and where does that get anyone? Peace, Bill.’
