Monkey Magic / February 15 2007
Congratulations to the Arctic Monkeys who scooped two awards – best British band and best British album – at the BRITs in London last night.
I don’t really like their music, it’s a little pedestrian and unsophisticated for my tastes, but anything to do with our simian cousins is fine by me.
Monkeys, I just flippin’ love ‘em! - funny little hairy creatures that they are.
He he, monkeys.

Mister NapoleonFantastic …
… I feel you are being ‘too polite’ in your references to simian=music … such is your way!
The young ‘chimps’ you speak of, surely did not deserve (taking into consideration the ‘other’ nominees) the ‘accolade’s’ they received. This is in no way, to be taken as disparaging, to their young musicianship typeness!
I am more interested in ‘Your’ version of the Brit Award ceremony, taking into consideration your invaluable experience as musician/songwriter/performer.
I will use the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Music’ award, as an example of ‘What’s/Who is … (Can’t We Think Of Someone Else, Let’s Revive Flagging Musical Sales/Prestige) … Popular’, or a bit popular still, and give them the award! Spice Girls: 2000! Sheesh!
As a Manc/Mancunian, from Manchester, (WHERE OASIS COME FROM) it kinda chokes me to say this … but, in my opinion, far more ‘worthy/weighty’ contenders for this award, other than the ‘Gobshites that are Oasis’ would have been ‘THE CLASH’. I am certain you have your own/other ‘worthy’ contenders for this title.
BTW: Happy Birthday.
xx

Thank you for the birthday wish.
As for my opinion of the BRITs, I’m afraid I don’t really take much of an interest.
Being a songwriter and musician myself, I feel I’m just a little too close to it to be able to pass any kind of useful or objective judgement. (I haven’t been watching much television at all recently, anyway. I have just come into a lot of money and have been very busy with a massively substantial studio upgrade and looking for somewhere else to live.)
I do, however, look forward immensely to attending the awards in person in years to come, with Enormous or Nelson Galaxy or some of the other Big Arena recording artists.
I was very saddened to hear of the death of the mighty Frankie Lane recently, and was slightly disappointed that no one thought to mention his passing on the night.
But, as I say, generally I don’t think that pontificating on the reasoning behind the awards process at these types of ceremonies and events has much - if indeed any - value.
Opinions are like arseholes: everybody has one.

Thinking about it, if I was to bestow a lifetime achievement award on anyone, it would of course have to be Elvis Costello. It is no secret that I am a very big fan of his mercurial talent and I cannot think of anyone more deserving. His output has always been vast and – to me at least – worthy of the very highest praise, from My Aim Is True, right up to the present.
Plus, (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes contains one of my all-time favourite lines:
‘Oh, I said “I’m so happy, I could die.”
She said “Drop dead”, then left with another guy.’
Classsic.
